Our History

Amir Khusro Sangeet Academy

Amir Khusro Sangeet Academy was founded in 2002 by Ustad Munna Shaokath Ali and Jyoti Belliappa. It is a non-profit registered charitable trust with 80G clearance from the Income Tax.

Amir Khusro Sangeet Academy is named after Hazrat Amir Khusro, the great Sufi Saint, poet-lyricist and scholar in Persian, Arabic, Hindi, and a musician who evolved instruments like the tabla, sitar, jaltararang, etc. He also wrote distinctive poetry in the languages he was well versed in, and created many ragas in Hindusthani Classical, like Hamir, Zeelf, Sarpardah. He is also known for his taranas which have become an integral part of the Qual.

AKSA aims to provide a performance platform to both seasoned and amateur artists. It was started with the idea of promoting Hindustani classical and related genres in the South, like ghazals and qawwalis, etc....

AKSA supports financially vulnerable and elderly artists who are no longer professionally active. Through structured financial assistance, it ensures that artists who once contributed to the field are recognized and supported with dignity and respect....

AKSA confers Honorary Awards upon distinguished individuals from diverse fields, honoring their expertise, outstanding contributions, and lifelong dedication. The award recognizes selfless service and excellence that have positively impacted their professional communities and society....

Artistic Legacy

AKSA’s Journey of Cultural Milestones

Under the auspices of the AKSA we have done no less than 50 programmes presenting stalwarts like Bharat Ratna Bismillah Khan Sahib on Shehnai, Padma Shri Shovana Narayan on kathak, Vidya Rao presenting Thumri, Ustad Ghulam Niyaz and Pandit Shantanu Bhattacharya on Hindusthani Vocals, Vidhushi Meera Savoor, and last but not the least, Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan, son of Ustad Salamat Ali Khan of Salamat Nazakat duo all the way from Pakistan. We also had the privilege of presenting young artists like Rimpa Shiva on the Tabla, and Rais Anis Sabri and Asad Irfan Sabri as young qawals, to mention a few.

In the recent years, AKSA has been holding mushairas and also presenting artists on piano well versed in Western Classical music.

We also gave Lifetime Achievement Awards to Padma Bhushan A.R. Rahman, Kalaimamani MS Viswanathan, Padma Bhushan N Ram, Padma Bhushan Sangeeth Kalanidhi DK Pattamal, Padma Shri Dr Y. G. Parthasarathi, Padma Shri Dr Vyjayanti Mala Bali, Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan, Dr. Cherien, Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohd. Abdul Ali, Nawabzyada Mohd. Asif Ali, Dewan to the Prince of Arcot, Kausalya Santanam, Jigyasa Giri, Hamsadhwani Ramchadran, Ragasudha Shreekrishnan.

AKSA has also collaborated with Kalakshetra, Hamsadhwani Music Academy, Bharatkalachar, KM Music Conservatory to mention a few.
